Siuslaw River Fishing
Siuslaw River
You will find the Siuslaw River when driving from Eugene Oregon to Florence Oregon which is a small city on Oregons central coast. You run into the river just about 20 miles before getting to Florence and then you follow it through the Siuslaw forest then into tidal flats and into Florence and into the Pacific Ocean.
The Siuslaw River has a long tidal section when many fishermen troll up and down the river fishing for Salmon. There is also some waterfowl hunting in this section of the river and wild Pigeons feed on huckleberries in the hills on either side.
The Siuslaw River above Mapleton is more like the babbling river you would expect to see in the Oregon Coastal Range. A drop and pool type river with lots of different types of water that will hold fish during different times of the year.
Siuslaw Chinook Salmon
The Chinook Salmon runs on the Siuslaw are its most atractive fishery. The tidal waters hold lots of fish and can be picked up a number of different ways.
Bobber and Egg fishing has become very popular on the Siuslaw and can be very productive. The fish tend to be really like this type of presentation and the fishermen can adjust the depth of the bait very easliy. Trolling with bait wrap such as herring is also very productive.
We use a sled for fishing the tidal waters which is a very comfortable way to fish. When your pole doubles over then it means you have a fish on and you are in for a battle.
Siuslaw Coho Fishing
Coho or also known as Silver Salmon can be found in the Siuslaw River in the Fall. They run a bit later than the Chinook do but you can still catch both species during a days fishing. Coho are a bit smaller than Chinook but they put up a hell of a fight.
When hooked the Coho Salmon tend to jump out of the water and continue to jump out of the water most of the time you are fighting them. Because they are thrashing around so much it is easy for the Coho to become unhooked and the fisherman becomes disappointed. If this happens get your gear back into the water quickly because generally where you find one Coho you will find more.
Coho are great eating fish and are delicious BBQ’d or baked.
